Uncertainty calibration is the discipline of aligning a system’s stated confidence with its actual probability of being correct. When calibration is poor, the system either sounds overly confident or unnecessarily hesitant. Both outcomes damage trust.
What is uncertainty calibration?
In simple terms, calibration measures whether a system that claims “I am 80% confident” is actually correct roughly 80% of the time. If the system is correct only 50% of the time when it says 80%, it is overconfident. If it is correct 95% of the time at 80% confidence, it is underconfident.
In high-stakes environments, even small calibration errors can create major downstream consequences. Users make decisions based not just on output — but on perceived certainty.
